ZERO BARK THIRTY: Seal Team 6 Member ‘Cairo’ Was Instrumental in Bin Laden Raid

The raid that resulted in the death of Osama Bin Laden is shrouded in mystery. Seal Team 6, their methods, and the identities of the service members all remain safely unknown as a matter of national security. However, one team member – a Belgian Malinois named Cairo – has been making some press as of late…

Check it out per Mental Floss:

Cairo the military dog was born and bred for the job. He is a Belgian Malinois, a shepherd breed that few were familiar with, until Cairo’s story became news. After Cairo trained to be a Military Working Dog at a young age, he advanced to Navy SEAL training.

Cairo was the only dog to accompany Navy SEAL Team 6 as they raided Osama bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan. Cairo was strapped to his handler as they were lowered from a helicopter, and wore special body armor while bursting into the compound.

The dog is the only member of SEAL Team 6 to be publicly named.

Here’s more from the New York Post:

On that mission, he was responsible for helping to secure the perimeter of the bin Laden house, sniffing out bombs and, if necessary, attacking enemy combatants. He wore a Kevlar vest with harnesses for rappelling and parachuting, a drainage system for waterborne assaults, and a night-vision camera with a 180-degree field of vision.

What made Cairo most valuable on this raid, however, were his intrinsic gifts, ones that cannot be replicated or simulated by humans or machines, and which give the United States unquantifiable advantages in the theater of war.

Though training a dog to detect a bomb is complicated — Ritland says there are over 200 steps to the training and, for obvious reasons, does not go into detail — this is the aspect most suited to the animal: Dogs have an 80% success rate in detecting explosive devices, far greater than that of man or machine.

“I WANT TO MEET THAT DOG.”

This was President Obama’s response upon hearing, in a private ceremony honoring Seal Team Six members who killed Osama Bin Laden, that a Belgian Malinois named Cairo was on the raid, according globalanimal.org. The president  was told that Cairo was in an adjoining room, waiting, at the request of White House Secret Service.

“IF YOU WANT TO MEET THE DOG, MR. PRESIDENT, I ADVISE YOU TO BRING TREATS,” THE NAVY SEAL SQUADRON COMMANDER JOKED AS OBAMA WENT OVER TO PET CAIRO.

What do you think of Cairo’s bravery and dedication?
