With liberal activists forcing their demands down the throats of the American public the Trump administration has made a stand, passing regulations that will allow doctors to refuse to perform any procedures that might violate their conscience.
“For too long too many of these healthcare practitioners have been bullied and discriminated against because of their religious beliefs and moral conviction,” Acting Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Eric Hargan announced last week while proclaiming the creation of the Conscience and Religious Freedom Division. The government, Hargan said, has “hounded religious hospitals and the men and women who staff them, forcing them to provide and refer for services that violate their consciences,” but will no longer be able to do so as a result of this latest order.
The controversy over medical professionals being forced to carry out procedures that might be against their conscience has come to a head in recent years, especially after the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare) required employers to provide insurance for gender reassignment surgeries. Since then, many professionals have refused to conduct such surgeries, arguing that they were potentially harmful to the patients and that they violated their personal moral codes, but their complaints have largely fallen on deaf ears.
“The Conscience and Religious Freedom Division has been established to restore federal enforcement of our nation’s laws that protect the fundamental and unalienable rights of conscience and religious freedom,” a statement from the Department of Health and Human Services said. ” The creation of the new division will provide HHS with the focus it needs to more vigorously and effectively enforce existing laws protecting the rights of conscience and religious freedom, the first freedom protected in the Bill of Rights.
It is about time the government has taken the steps necessary to ensure that Americans are able to perform their tasks without fear of being forced to violate their conscience. And while sadly it is too late for some, such as the baker in Colorado who’s business was destroyed, perhaps the creation of this new division is the first step on a true path of religious freedom in this country. A path where the government stays out of our private, personal beliefs, just as our Founding Fathers wanted.
