During President Donald Trump’s first year in office the country’s law enforcement agencies have seen some sweeping changes that they never believed possible during the Obama regime. The agency that arguably benefitted the most from President Trump’s reforms has been Immigration Customs and Prevention (ICE), and now some of their top officials have come forward to tell the public just how much better off we are now that we have a real President at the helm.
“For a large part of the last four or five years we’ve been unable to take enforcement action against those individuals,” executive associate director for enforcement and removal operations Matthew T. Albence told reporters, talking about illegal immigrants living in the United States. “Our officers had to turn their heads and walk the other way,” he went on, explaining that officers could not even remove illegals who were already behind bars. “That’s a large part of that problem, the fact that we couldn’t enforce the law.”
Under Trump, however, many of the restrictions placed on ICE have been lifted, and the numbers certainly show it. According to the latest ICE reports, there have been “143,470 arrests and 226,119 removals” nationwide, and that number still has some time to grow before the end of the year.
Unfortunately, however, due to the lack of action by the Obama administration, ICE still has a hefty workload ahead of them. As the Washington Examiner tells us, “U.S. immigration officials have revealed that they face a deportation backlog of 550,000 illegal immigrants who were given temporary amnesty by former President Obama or simply let off the hook by liberal judges. The massive backlog is being tackled by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, but the sheer numbers — bigger than the populations of Atlanta or Sacramento — is overwhelming the agency’s enforcement and removal department.”
Liberal judges have also proven to be a problem for enforcement operations, as judges in many cities have filed orders to protect the illegals living within their jurisdiction. “We need to hold liberal judges accountable,” said ICE Acting Director Thomas D. Homan. “There has to be a consequence and a deterrence to illegal activity or the illegal activity won’t stop.”
“We’ve made a lot of headway this year, more than I’ve seen in a long time, and we’ve got to keep going down this road. We’ve got to keep the momentum going,” Homen went on to say.
